What itch do you have that you need to scratch?
I’m talking metaphorically here.. The power of an itch! Maybe it’s something that you’ve been wrestling with, maybe something you know you need to be doing but keep putting off. Is it a task, maybe some habits that need to change? Just remember, itches don’t go away – the sooner you scratch them, the sooner the relief!
Why am I thinking about this? No great reason really, but tonight I was so badly HANGING for an outdoor run, that NOTHING was going to stop me! Not until my Ipod went flat after 5 minutes! Grrr.. Thought I had charged it properly…
My option – run in silence (those of you who are used to running to music will know how I didn’t like that thought) or skip my run. Tonight, neither of these things were an option!
So at 8.30pm I got home from the gym, put my Ipod on charge and waited. And waited. And waited (quite hungry by now) And headed out the door at 9.30pm! And I tell you what, it was WONDERFUL! I totally loved every minute of it! (Maybe not so much the hill at the end)… But it was just such an awesome buzzy feeling! I think I would have strangled someone if I hadn’t have run tonight!I stuck to the street lit main roads (I’m all for advocating safety), cranked my favourite ‘on the go’ songlist and ran for 50 minutes without once feeling like I wanted to stop.
That was the power of the itch. It had been itchy for some time. A whole week without an outdoor run – which in my book is enough to send me mad!
The whole run I thought about this concept. The longer something is itchy, the greater the relief when you scratch it. That doesn’t mean you should put it off to get more relief, cos the fact is it is a greater relief, but often a more painful relief!
This especially applies in regards to getting back into an exercise program after some time – always some pain involved! But the fact that the itch is often in your belly – a desire to DO something!
And once you’ve decided to scratch that itch, let NOTHING stop you doing it! Because the feeling – whether it is hard or easy – is always the most satisfying feeling of all.
